The Hollow Crown

by Eleanor Vance

4.5(18,420)

A dethroned heir, a mountain kingdom on the brink, and a magic that demands a terrible price. Eleanor Vance opens her acclaimed saga with a coronation that changes everything.

About this book

When the old king dies without a named successor, seventeen-year-old Wren discovers she is the last of a bloodline everyone believed extinct. The lantern-magic that once protected the mountain realm has begun to fail, and the great families circle the empty throne like wolves.

To claim the Hollow Crown, Wren must descend into the tunnels beneath the capital and rekindle a flame that has been dark for a hundred years — a flame that takes as much as it gives.

Lush, propulsive, and emotionally precise, The Hollow Crown announces Eleanor Vance as a major voice in modern fantasy.

Utterly transporting

I read this in two sittings and immediately started again. The world-building is rich without ever slowing the story down, and the ending genuinely surprised me. Easily my favorite read of the year.

Beautiful, if a little slow to start

The first hundred pages take their time, but once the story finds its footing it is impossible to put down. The prose is gorgeous throughout.

A new favorite

The characters feel like people I know. I was thinking about them for days after finishing. Cannot recommend enough.

Good, not great

Solid and well written, but it did not quite live up to the hype for me. Still worth reading if the premise appeals to you.
