It is rare for a book to arrive with as much anticipation as The Hollow Crown and then quietly exceed it. Eleanor Vance writes with the kind of assurance that makes a complicated story feel effortless, and the result is a novel that rewards both the casual reader and the devoted genre fan.
What impresses most is the balance. There is spectacle here, but it never comes at the expense of character. Every set piece is anchored by people we have come to care about, and the emotional beats land precisely because the quieter scenes were given room to breathe.
Is it perfect? Not quite — the opening act takes its time, and readers who prefer an immediate hook may need a little patience. But stay with it, and you will find a story that pays off its setup handsomely.

Utterly transporting
I read this in two sittings and immediately started again. The world-building is rich without ever slowing the story down, and the ending genuinely surprised me. Easily my favorite read of the year.

Beautiful, if a little slow to start
The first hundred pages take their time, but once the story finds its footing it is impossible to put down. The prose is gorgeous throughout.
